Creating An Original Opera

The 4th Graders began the school year by attending the opera “The Scorpions’ Sting” at Evanston High School.  Just before Spring Break we went on a backstage tour of Lyric Opera Chicago.  Now it is time for our final collaborative project – creating our own original opera.  Our show will be about 5 kids traveling to Ellis Island, as part of our immigration studies.  Students completed an interest sheet indicating their interest in various jobs available in our opera company.  The writers have already created most of our script, the composers have generated melodic MOTIFS for each character, and are on their way to having our entire show composed.  From there the other jobs will be able to create an entire production of our opera during our “STEAM week,” beginning May 14.

Check out our recordings from the work with the COMPOSERS here!

  1. Gary, you are in your element, and the kids are soooooo lucky to have you as their teacher as you teach much more than music. Congratulations to you and the fourth graders!
